Custom Flower Headpiece

We were invited to a disco forest party on a farm taking place in the outskirts of Austin, Texas. Naturally, this was an opportunity to make something new. After weeks of putting crafting off, it was the day of the event and I was still debating what to do. Will people be dressing up or not? It’s not Halloween, it’s September. We’re not college kids, we’re grown adults. We didn’t know most of the invite list so we weren’t sure if they dressed up. So, I landed on putting together an outfit I could easily take off pieces of if I went overboard or could ditch all together if everyone was in regular clothing.

The Pinterest mood board they sent in preparation for the party had all sorts of forest creatures. My peacock piece would be a natural fit, although very flashy, and not new (to me). I opted to make a flower headpiece because they’re pretty, I like headpieces, and working with flowers are on the easy side so I could complete it fast.

I did a quick trip to Joanne Fabrics and picked up a ew fake flowers with colors that looked good together, sizes that would look nice, and formats that would be pretty (both hanging / draped flowers and standard stems). I used a millinery buckram hat based to have everything sit on but you can just as easily work with a headband. I like that base type over a headband because it’s really flexible, had a mesh like appearance so hot glue adheres well, and has a decent amount of real estate to adhere things to. I added adjustable straps to go behind the head when wearing it spanning from end to end of the base, for extra support. I made the adjustable straps myself as I had all the pieces (metal, elastic, sewing machine) but you can just as easily use a bra strap or nothing if you don’t need the support.

Gwen helped me figured out what look I wanted. I didn’t want it to have a Dia de Los Muertos vibe so I wanted draped flowers that would look more like long hanging forest creature type hair.

After trying it on, it didn’t seem grand enough so I wanted to add another top layer. I just so happened to have a metal headband lying around that sits a few inches above the crown of the head. I decided to use that and hot glued pieces of the leftover white flowers around it. Then I glued the sides of it to the base headpiece. To top things off, I added two sets of lights that I wound around the metal portion so it was easily seen at night.

I put the peacock piece on then took it off an I put the headpiece on. After seeing me in each, my husband said go big and bold – wear both together. So I did. Most people were dressed up with bits of flare rather than a full blown costume but I didn’t mind. I kept everything on all night and had a great time. People gravitated towards me to talk about the costume so it was a lovely conversation piece.
